Sycamore, Illinois

Saturday, June 25, we left the Hollewell farm for a one-hour drive to Sycamore, Illinois for a picnic lunch. We scooted into town, grabbed a bagged lunch, and met up with two of Franz's high school friends at the park. The Drapers are friends of ours; most recently from Phoenix, where they lived for years before returning "home" to Illinois. They now reside in Sycamore with their two children, whom we have known since birth. Jason, Franz, and another friend, Jeremy formed a band in high school and pulled many a prank about town on their summers off from college. Jeremy and all but one of his five children drove from Wheaton to join us. His wife and oldest daughter stayed behind for a piano event. It was a carefree afternoon of catching up.

The guys

Maddie has known Jake her whole life. In fact, she used to call him "Cakey" as one of her earliest words.

Jaimee and I were pregnant with Jaylin and Katie at the same time. Their birthdays are three weeks apart. We have pictures of them together as newborns.

It was hard to believe how big the kids were, since we hadn't seen them in a year. But I guess our girls have grown up in that time, too.

Jackson spent time with both his sisters and took delight in the small things that day, like discovering his belly button.

When the afternoon of play drew to a close, we bundled back up in the car for a half-hour trek to Wheaton, Illinois, and the home of Franz's parents.
