Hello, Shrieves!

Before heading from Rochester to Angola again, we re-routed through rural Indiana to visit our good friends the Shrieves at their family lake home for an afternoon of fun.

The day we arrived was sunny and warm. The air was heavy. Their baby was still napping, so we prepped for a boat ride and lunch. Doug took our family and their two older boys over to the sandbar, and a couple of their friends and neighbors set out to tag along. Caroline followed behind with baby Spencer and lunch.

Shortly after we arrived at the sandbar, a weather front moved in with lightning not far behind. We quickly put all the kids in the back of Caroline's boat and she and I passed out half sandwiches and chips. Then, she put the boat in gear and headed back for the pier. The storm was moving in quickly and we became concerned that we couldn't outrun the lightning, so she put the boat into its top gear and the kids ecstatically jostled around, crumbling chips and shrieking in delight. We arrived at the pier just as the rain began, and hurried the kids inside the house. Franz and Doug arrived minutes later.

Once we were inside, the rain began in earnest and the power went out for a short time. LJ, who is Katie's age, bravely worked the flashlight to keep them all from fear in the daylit room upstairs where they were huddled. It was a grand adventure.

After the storm passed, all the neighborhood kids came pouring out the houses clustered around the piers. They jumped into a game, new to us but beloved by them. A large tube was turned upside down and the kids squirted it and themselves in dishsoap, then proceeded to do all sorts of tricks while sliding, jumping, or rolling into the water. It lasted until the soap was gone.

Late that afternoon, we left for the Forman family lake house in Angola, with plans to arrive for dinner. Boy, there is nothing like lake jumping in the Midwest to get Franz into vacation mode!
