I was trying to find an interesting television show to settle in to the other night when I found a real gem that I know a couple of my brothers-in-law would have loved.
The show was an hour long look into how exactly a Bugatti Veyron is handmade and tested in Germany. First of all, Emily and I got a close up look at one of these invaluable vehicles when we were visiting Franz and Emily last year around this time. I only remember Franz saying something simple like, "That car costs over a million dollars". It kind of got my attention. Pretty much made me start questioning things about life.
Anyway, some interesting stats from the show (I admittedly didn't watch the full hour end to end.):
- Built at a VW plant and tested at VW's top secret testing facility that includes a high speed oval and miles of road course.
- Entire engine is hand-built
- Engine is basically two 8cylinder engines put together
- In order to allow the engine to function at its highest RPM capacity, it requires 10 radiators that are handbuilt to keep the engine from over heating. The heat that it puts out at top speed will heat 20 homes for a year.
- The computer only allows it to reach a top speed of 253 (I think that was the number) even though it has enough horsepower to go faster.
- The engine parts are made of titanium and delivered in padded cases by a person.
- The exterior is aluminum to keep the weight down.
There was a lot more info, but this show was worth saving on a DVR and watching a few times...why didn't I think of that at the time?

I loved this. Kyle read through it, but when I first mentioned it, he started rattling on about it. I've heard a lot about the Veyron over the last 6 months. Crazy, isn't it? How is there a market for that?
How in the world do people have that much money?
Thanks for the post, Ev!
