In Defense of January

While I concur with Lana about the potential weather in January and the very nasty mucous ads (what DOES mucous have to do with January, anyway?!), I must speak up in defense of the month of my birth. Following is a list of various reasons why January is a very eventful and needed month of the year:
  • My own birth (of course!) 25 years ago...oh, wait...
  • Madeline's first dentist appointment
  • Time to preschool shop
  • A private tour of the White House - Yes, we got approved! Give it up for W!
  • My bi-annual tooth cleaning appointment - I LOVE IT
  • Hikes in the desert at mid-day - no overheating
  • Inauguration day - every four years
  • No more holiday food!!
  • Just slow down a little bit
  • A whole new year - nothing is messed up yet
  • Plans...

So, let's hear those resolutions, People. Let's have a contest for best resolution. Most likely to succeed. Most outlandish. Biggest ever.

I don't know about resolutions! They usually set me up for failure! Are they the same as goals? I usually shy away from goals, too. (I know that comes as a surprise to you!)

But...I DID have my annual teeth cleaning appointment and it WAS great!

I am NOT eating sugary, fatty foods every 20 minutes all day long like I did for all of December and the first day of January! It was fun and tasted good at the time, but Yuck!

Does that count?

I agree with Emily, lots of great things can happen in January. I've already had a four day vacation thanks to Martin Luther King Jr, I've been hiking in the S.C. mountains, and I'm headed to Burlington NC tomorrow to hear Bill Irwin speak. Bill is the only blind man who has thruhiked the Appalachian Trail. I can't wait. Besides all of this, there have been some pretty good football games on as of late, also.

Ok ok, so maybe none of you experience SADD, or maybe you simply are in a better stage of life right now. I'm sure, someday, I won't hate Jan/Feb as much as I do now.

Em, you're right. There are many reasons it's good. But while it is the beginning of the year for some, keep in mind that for college students, it's only mid-year, which is never a fun place to be.

I'm with mom - I don't really make New Year's Resolutions because I know I can't keep them. I guess one, though, is to grow in faith and get closer to God.

I think Lana is forgetting that just 'being in college' would make any January a great time. Maybe it is just me and my unusual sense that if I'm crowded by people they are all my friends... I just miss all the activity and young people...Oh Rochester, where have all the young adults gone?

I like January a lot, for reasons most of you already mentioned... I love the football competitions, return to normal eating, slowing down a bit, looking ahead, planning...

I'm with Mom on the goal setting. It always makes me shy away. I like lists, just with no pressure or timeframes. I am excited for mine and Emily's first spring and summer together in our cute little house. It will be fun doing things to the property. And I've already got fishing on the brain... unbelievable.

Okay, so I don't ever set resolutions either, but at least now I know it's genetic. (Right?) I am feeling the urge to travel a little this year. Maybe some in-state site seeing, and Western states trips. Amazingly enough, we haven't done much of that. I'm really hoping I get motivated to finish decorating my house this year, too. I'm kind of slowly working on the kitchen right now. Also, a little more reading and exercising. Working toward balance...whatever that is.
