Madeline's Career Change

Well, nightgown designer no more, Madeline has her sights set higher now. Lately, whether you believe me or not, Madeline has been filling her free time by asking me or anyone else who's around, really, to tell a story. Not just any story, but specifically, "a story about when somebody was sick and a doctor maked them better."

So, any small brush with the medical community that any of you have had has been thoroughly re-hashed for her now. I'm running out of fodder for this discussion, but she never seems to grow tired of it.

She hangs on every word, repeating part of it back sentence for sentence, asking pertinent questions, like "What is a ventilator?" She is especially fond of surgery, as any of you who have happened to sit near her "doctor kit" (plastic veterinary tools) have unfortunately found out. She likes to hear about it, practice it (still in pretend, thankfully), and loves to watch "doctor shows."

So, I asked her last night, after talking about little Micah Fraley and his most recent heart surgery two days ago, if she was interested in becoming a doctor when she grew up.

"Sure, Momma (that's what she calls me know). Sure, I could be a doctor. I could do surgery."

"What kind of doctor? What would you like to work on?"

"Ummm: ears."

"An ear/nose/throat doctor, then?"

"Sure. That would be good."

Silence.

The matter, in her mind, is settled.

I can attest to Madeline's interest in surgery. She asked me to tell her story after story of someone's surgery and how the doctor made them better. Leslie's shoulder, Lana's hand, Evan's tonsils, adenoids, and appendix have all been discussed!

We need a doctor in the family! Good idea, Madeline!
