I always get news late; a function of being busy with kids and work, I'm sure. Anyway, when I was shopping for formula this weekend because we were literally, completely out, I discovered that the shelves reserved for Jackson's Similac Advance were totally empty. None.
In small print, on a white card affixed to one of the shelves was a note stating that Abbott Labs had issued a recall on all its powdered infant formulas. At the time I was aggravated by the inconvenience. I had to either pay up big-time for liquid formula of the same brand, or change brands, which is not advised if your infant is doing well with the brand he is on. (I followed the promptings of my pocketbook and changed brands, by the way.)
So, finally on Wednesday morning, I checked out the reason for the recall - nothing I could have done about it in the meantime, as we were completely out of that formula when I discovered the recall to start with. Here is what Abbott Labs had to say about it:
Abbott is recalling these items following an internal quality review, which detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is the possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae , could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.
Oh. My. Gosh. So, I immediately start thinking about how Jackson didn't finish his baby food a couple of times recently, and had a couple of blowout diapers. Related? Who knows! Enough to send me over the edge? Yes!
