I was delighted to receive this darling kitty from my "budding artist" granddaughter in the mail! What a great surprise when I opened the envelope from AZ! I can't describe the sheer joy as I looked and laughed and reflected on my phone conversation with Madeline a few days before. She was bored. Everyone else was gone or asleep and she had to be quiet! I suggested a few activities which she vetoed for one reason or another. Finally, I said, "Madeline, you color so nicely, staying in the lines and choosing pretty colors, but I haven't seen anything you have drawn for awhile. Why don't you draw a picture?"
She said, "I'm going to make a picture for you!" Later, she called to tell me that an envelope was in the mail for me with a surprise.
When I received it, I called Madeline to thank her for the wonderful kitty picture. I told her I loved it and had hung it on my refrigerator, so I could think of her often when I look at it.
Madeline's response? "But the will make you sad."
"Why will it make me sad?" I asked the suddenly serious little voice on the other end of the line. "It reminds me how much you love me, because you made it for me and that makes me happy!"
"But", Madeline said unhappily, "when you look at it you will miss me because I am far away, and that will make you sad."
I tried again to tell her it would, instead make me happy, because it reminded me of her love. But she remained unconvinced. She was adamant that I would be sad every time I looked at her picture, because I would miss her. Is that why she sent it to me -- To make me sad? To remind me to miss her?
I'm sorry, Madeline, but I just smile and, sometimes, laugh when I look at your adorable orange and blue kitty with the webbed feet and no body. I love it and I love you!!!
[I scanned Madeline's kitty picture for you to see, but I couldn't get it to post on the blog. Maybe I will get it figured out and be able to share it with all of you later. I hope so!]
