Well, Katie has done it. She turned two, learned how to sing the "Happy Birthday" song, blew out candles, stuffed herself with cake, and experienced the thrill of wrapped presents. It was a small party; in fact, just Franz, Madeline, myself, and Mom and Dad (who flew in that evening from Indiana). We considered having a big shin-dig, but realized that since Katie doesn't really like people it would probably be a flop. Instead we stuck with what we knew she liked: tissue paper, chocolate cake, strawberry ice cream, a big ladybug balloon, and lots of anticipation. She was so overwhelmed with excitement that whenever she opened another present, she squealed in a high-pitched voice, "Maddie Gwaaace!" She didn't know what to do or say. Madeline helped her clear that up. Katie was spoiled for sure, with gifts being sent to her by mail, left here by Grandma & Papa Forman from their visit earlier in the month, and tucked in Grandma and Papa "Chocolate's" suitcase from several people. Here you can see the intense excitement in her face, as she opens a gift from Great-Grandma and Papa Gottschalk.
Just because it was fitting since she was turning two, and had been shorted in the nap department that day, we did see glimpses of the independent streak. Check out this stinker of a face:

Franz faithfully recorded the event, mood swings and all.
After Madeline showed her how to blow out one of her candles, Katie caught on and blew out the other.
She couldn't get enough of the chocolate cupcake and strawberry ice cream.
