Christmas Parties
I know Maddie personally invited some of you to her Christmas Kindergarten program, so I thought I'd post some pictures, so you could see what it was all about. All four K classes joined each other on the stage after all their parents arrived 45 minutes early and, with smiling faces, fought each other for the best seats in the house. We ended up on an outside aisle behind two nice ladies who hadn't seen each other in "forever" and spent the 30 minute show leaning their heads in front of my video camera to whisper. Delightful. Katie promptly cut her foot pretty badly on some sharp part of the bleachers temporarily erected for our viewing pleasure. So, she was miserable the whole time, and since Franz was out of town at an auction, I was juggling a sad, hurt 3-year-old, a video camera which had to be on the constant move due to the ladies in front of me, and a standard camera. I tell you, you really missed something!
Madeline is in the second row up, 6th person from the right. What do you mean, you can't see her? She was very intense the whole time, and knew the words and motions to every song.
She was quite pleased with herself when she was done and wanted to share the joyous feeling with her sister, who had still not quite recovered from the dark blood that had congealed on her foot.
However, Maddie's excitement and self-satisfaction were not to be dampened, so she found other, more pleasant company - herself.
Katie had a wonderful Christmas party on her last day of school. It was too rainy and cold to be outside so we all crowded inside, parents included. They had a quick birthday celebration for a little girl who brought cookies with thick frosting and sprinkles, starting the day off right at 9:00 AM. Then they listened to several Christmas storybooks.
Finally, Santa arrived to hold each child. Amazingly, only one screamed upon seeing him, and she eventually recovered enough to sit on his lap quickly, in order to get one of the candy canes he was handing out. True to form, Katie braved the frightening experience for the candy cane, and was a sassy little thing when questioned by the man in red. Her entire Christmas list this year has been: gum and a pig. Thankfully, when asked that day, she forgot to mention the pig, so maybe Santa doesn't know about that one. She said, "Gum." Santa asked what kind and she answered, "Flavored." He asked if something like Hubba Bubba was what she wanted. She responded by looking directly at him for the first and only time, and scornfully saying, "No, just GUM." And that was the end of that. Having gotten nowhere with his conversation, Santa handed over the coveted candy and moved on. Smart guy.
The last activity of the day was gingerbread house-making. The kids used graham crackers and frosting and candy and had a wonderful time. Somehow, Katie's white shirt stayed white. Her mood brightened considerably, too. After a great time making the second gingerbread house of the season, we packed up the book from her book exchange, the house, the reindeer shaped brown bag of treats from her teacher, and her coat, and headed home. It was a complete success.
