After cancelling the Big Boys and Their Toys exhibit for the same weekend and anxiously waiting for Katie's recovery from the 105 degree fevers, we were looking forward (Franz and I) to just getting away by ourselves for awhile. Mom and Dad were here. Plans had been in place down to the tours and times for two full months.
The day before we left, the concierge called from the hotel we were staying at...couldn't find our reservation. And, what do you know, but George W. Bush was going to be in Napa that same weekend. No hotels had space. No room in the inn...
So, after I spent a couple hours on the phones and got nowhere, the family salesman spent a couple hours on the phone and got us a jacuzzi room at a little hotel (comped by Marriott) for Friday night, and then back over to the Marriott on Sat. and Sun. nights. I don't know how he does it!
We did have to sit next to the lavs on the plane - in the row that doesn't recline, but at least it was only a 2 hour flight. And I was so exhausted at that point, I could have slept anywhere. The weather was cool and cloudy, a nice change from the ever-present Phoenix sun and heat. The tours were interesting (aside from the huge gross man - in the Hawaiian shirt with his hairy belly sticking out of the bottom where he forgot to button it - who was threatening the whole tour group with debauched conversations about dancing on the "pole" (handbar from floor to ceiling) on the bus, which happened to be pretty much in Franz's lap). It was such a relaxing time, especially if we didn't fixate on the fact that we got up at 5:00 AM every morning to try to take a hot air balloon ride that never materialized.
At any rate, the pictures are attached.

We have definitely had those awful seats at the back...very loud and lots of traffic to the lavatory! Oh well. Glad you had a good trip (after the setbacks)...your pictures are great!
I'm glad to see you posting on the site! Nice to have more visitors! I've been thinking about your huge upcoming trip later this year. Any more news on that? What have you decided about booking an extra plane seat?
They are telling us maybe July...so we are cautiously optimistic. :) I think we are definitely going to book at least one extra seat for the way back. Should be an exciting trip!
Don't forget the sippy cups and snacks for ear popping! Do they have people to talk to / guidelines about the types of things to bring and do during all that travel with the babies?
We do have a web group of other adoptive parents (Russia & Kazakhstan), so they will hopefully be a good resource. We also have aquaintances here in town that travelled back with two last fall. Yeah, we will be bringing snacks, sippy cups, books, toys, etc. Please feel free to pass on any tips you might have for travel - your girls are some of the most travelled kids I know. :)
Benadryl and ear plugs...?
Just kidding! It is definitely full-time busy when traveling, but fun all the same. Kids love adventure.
