Emily sent me a couple of photos today that reminded me of Emily when she was about a third grader. I only wish that I had had the foresight to take a photo then. I do remember that I was in the kitchen preparing supper, when Emily came to me with "a great idea". I tried to let her know that this was not a good time to help her with one of her never-ending great ideas, but, as usual, she was very persistent. I stopped my preparations long enough to help her complete her project. In school her class was learning some of the major bones of the body. Emily's brainstorm still amazes me! She came to me in her black leotard and small pieces of paper with one bone name carefully written on each. She put tape on each paper and hung the papers on the edge of the kitchen counter while I worked on supper. When I realized she wasn't going to give up, I asked her what she needed me to do. Please tape the right paper over the correct bone on her body. I couldn't believe it! But I taped the pieces of white paper over her scapula, humerus, femur, clavicle, etc. She was so very pleased as she pranced around with her bone names contrasting with her black leotard. About that time the doorbell rang. As I let a woman from our church in and she caught sight of Emily, I perceived a look that betrayed her thoughts --something along the lines of "they're crazier than I thought around here." She didn't seem to appreciate the creativity and the learning going on and left rather promptly. I still laugh every time I remember Emily's bones and the woman's funny expression. And I am still amazed at her unending creativity! I just don't think like that!
Anyway, on to the pictures Emily sent today. The background is that Madeline's kindergarten class has some eggs in an incubator which have been hatching to reveal the chicks inside. The children have been very excited! Yesterday, one of the children brought an orphan baby duckling and the kids watched a chick and the duckling interacting. Madeline really gets into things much like her mother did. After school, when Emily came around the corner at home she found her very creative daughter had made herself into a chick, complete with orange chick legs and feet, a little tail, tiny wings, and a chick head with attached beak. Please look carefully at the details in the photos below. How many kids do you think turned into self-designed chicks when they got home. It isn't hard to imagine Emily doing that as a youngster!
Here are the chick pics!
