Old-fashioned Nonsense

Well, I'm not sure why people lived in Arizona before air conditioning was invented, but I've never thought too highly of their smarts. I certainly never wanted to try out a day in the life of...

However, thanks to the powers that be, I am, in part, getting to experience such a thrill. Our upstairs air conditioning unit is broken. In the summer. In Phoenix. In my house. Luckily, we have another unit for the downstairs, and one for the play room. So, really, it's just the bedrooms where the air feels like a palpable wave of molten lava, since the downstairs is open to the upstairs hallways.

It does make for some fun nights, though. Katie got up 5 times last night (I slept 3 hours). Maddie ended up sideways, sweaty and kicking in my bed. I finally awoke with sticky neck. That is just a gross way to start a day, if you ask me.

At this moment, Maddie is napping in the playroom (yeah, right - would you nap in a playroom?), and poor Katie (who is so sensitive to her surroundings still) is sleeping in her room in just a diaper with her ceiling fan on high and a box fan on high blowing hallway air toward her crib over a giant bowl of ice water. And none of her doors are shut. She hates that.

Guess what! We can get our air conditioner checked out on August 1st. Only a whole week away! A whole week of sticky neck and sweaty, screaming children. By the way, did anyone else notice that it is 109 degrees out right now, and the hottest part of the day is still two hours away? The only good(ish) part about this is that the extended weather forecast for the next week (starting tomorrow) is actually in the 90s because of the monsoons. Maybe the only break in heat we've had all summer. But, of course, that does imply a huge increase in humidity because they're predicting thunderstorms solid all week.

Sounds like we'll be spending lots of time in hillbilly camp - running around in our diapers barefoot and sucking on popsicles that are running down our chins. Just can't get away from those sticky necks.

Sick! Sticky neck is the worst. I, too, dealt with that a bit early this summer. But now...that is simply unbearable.

I'm glad you'll have it fixed by the time I come out!

When is it, exactly, that you're coming up here? Who knew you'd be looking forward to returning to the Midwest in August, right?

Sorry, Em. That's awful.

Sounds like a day in the life of an A.T. thru-hiker. I am almost acustomed to "sticky neck" as it were!
